Access to WTF Sanctioned Open events in 2012 and 2013

The introduction of the WTF membership system and the Global Athlete Licence (GAL) means that ultimately, only members of STA will have access to these events including the large benchmark Open events such as the US Open, Dutch Open, German Open, British Open etc. Already for the recent French Open in 2011, all athletes who participated at this event were required to have a letter of authority from STA.

A meeting has now been scheduled by the WTF to discuss this matter. The meeting will take place on 2nd February 2012 in Korea and before all of the World's major International Open events begin in 2012.

The Continental Unions of the WTF support restricting access to all Open events to members of the respective recognised associations of the WTF. The WTF itself has indicated that access to such events in 2013 will require a GAL Licence which can only be obtained from national associations such as STA.

Given the meeting to discuss this matter is scheduled on 2nd February and given the position of the Continental Unions, a likely outcome of the meeting may be that any athlete wishing to participate at any International Open event in 2012, will require either a GAL or a WTF membership card.

For Australian athletes these can only be obtained if you are a members of STA.

If you are making plans to compete at any of these events in 2012, make sure your application for membership of STA is received well before your planned trip and well before you make travel plans to attend any international open event in order to avoid disappointment.

STA Adopts Intellectual Property Policy to Protect its Members.

A recent poster has been published advertising the Adelaide Open. The poster could also be found on a web site called Just Kicks Taekwondo and MMA, located in Adelaide. The web site and the poster in combination displayed the WTF logo, the ASC logo and the Olympic rings.

STA wrote to the club asking that the WTF logo and other logos be removed as that club was:

  • Not a member of STA
  • Not a member of the WTF
  • Not a member of the AOC
  • Not a member of the ASC

The use of the WTF logo in particular, may have confused people into believing that the club was a member of STA as only STA member clubs are permitted to use and display the WTF logo.

Despite receiving no favourable response from the club that it would take action to remove the misleading insignia, STA was advised by the ASC that it has demanded the removal of its logo and the WTF have also now written to the club asking that it take action to remove the WTF logo from all its publications as the WTF logo can only be used by STA members.

To view the WTF's letter click here. To view STA's Intellectual Property policy click here.

STA is committed to taking the strongest action under its policy to protect its interests and that of its members who are the only clubs/organisations permitted to use the WTF, OTU and AOC logo to the exclusion of any club or organisation that is not a member of STA.

VOTE FOR STEVEN CURRIE- VEGEMITE'S TOAST OF A NATION NOMINEE & TAEKWONDO PARALYMPIC WORLD CHAMPION

Steve is a fine example of an Australian who is giving it all he has.  Steven overcame bullying in his childhood and a significant physical loss to train unremittingly and become Australia¹s first Taekwondo World Champion.

He has self-funded many trips overseas, most recently to Russia, to compete and represent Australia in Taekwondo. Though Taekwondo is a martial art, its discipline, technique and mental training are the mortar for building a strong sense of justice, fortitude, humility and resolve which are all qualities Steven represents. What makes Steve the Toast of the Nation¹ is that he has always trained with and competed against able bodied athletes, despite being completely paralyzed in his left arm following a motorbike accident in 2005.

With a resilient attitude, a dedication to strict rehabilitation and the endless guidance of his coach and former Olympian Carlo Massimino, Steven gained his Black Belt and regained a love for life and the possibilities it still held for him. Regardless of his setback, he has never lost his resolve to be the best and inspire the next generation of Australians to aim highand achieve, no matter their circumstances.

Vote now for Steven! by clicking here.

STA 2011 Australian Open a great success

The 2011 Australian Open was conducted over 2 days on the Gold Coast, Queensland which saw athletes participating in Poomsae and Sparring from the following 12 nations compete in Australia's inaugural Open event: Australia, France, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Singapore and USA.

The level of competition was of a very high standard, which provided our Australian athletes with valuable international competition experience.

STA's President John Kotsifas said, "This was Australia's first Australian Open and the level of support from other nations was fantastic. We expect even a larger number of teams in 2012 as we already have had commitments from many European countries and others from the Asian, Pan American and African region. We also had athletes who had recently qualified for the 2012 Olympics compete in this year's event".

"All but one of our referees was a WTF International Referee or had just completed the WTF IR course held in the 4 days prior to the Australian Open, and consequently, the level of officiating was of the highest standard. We also had many highly experienced IR's from overseas who will be officiating at the 2012 London Olympic games, officiating at our event. They were selected by the WTF to referee at the Oceania Olympic selection event in Noumea the week before and decided to attend the open event at STA's invitation. They helped us stage an event with the highest level of referee officiating ever seen in Australia. That and the use of the latest Daedo PSS electronic scoring system and the latest drug testing undertaken by ASADA officials from the Australian Sports Commission, made this a first class international event," STA's President said.

"The Australian Open is now on everyone's international competition calendar and in 2012 it will be a sanctioned WTF international Open event providing athletes with world ranking points", John Kotsifas said.

Our Australian coaches all indicated that it was fantastic to see their athletes compete with high level international players.

Due to the unprecedented enquiries we have had about next year's event, the 2012 Australian Open has been awarded to STA Qld and will again be held on the Gold Coast. Event details will be available in the next few weeks to enable clubs and athletes to make arrangements for 2012 well in advance.

Our sincere thanks and appreciation is extended to all STA QLD clubs, instructors and a special thank you to Caboolture Tkd club and the STA Qld Branch of Rawlins Tkd club for their volunteers who supported this great event and who ensured its success.

WTF Newletter Features AUS M58kg Athlete

Safwan Khalil has featured in the WTF Newsletter - the article is reproduced below:

Safwan KHALIL (Men's -58kg), Australia

The young Australian who dreams of an Olympic medal has taken one step closer toward his dream.  Safwan KHALIL won the gold medal in Men's 58kg after brushing off the tough challenge of Iranian opponent, Hadi, MOSTEAN LORON, in the 4th, or so called sudden death, round, with a head-shot on August 21, 2011 at the 2011 Shenzhen Summer Universiade.

The young Australian celebrated his hard-won victory by dancing joyously on the court, attracting applause from the spectators who jam-packed the stadium.

Khalil is feeling more confident by this victory and believes that he has come closer toward his Olympic dream. He is an athlete driven by the spirit of tenacity. He had been defeated at the quarter-final of the WTF World Qualification Tournament for the 2012 London Olympic Games which was held at Baku, Azerbaijan, on June 29 to July 4, 2011.

Not overwhelmed by the defeat, Khalil kept training and now has won a gold medal here at Shenzhen, in just a little over one month after Baku.

Safwan Khalil will participate in the Oceania Continental Qualification Tournament for the 2012 London Olympic Games in Noumea, New Caledonia, on September 11, 2011.

Q: Congratulations!
A: Thank you! I am so glad.

Q: You participated in Baku Qualification Tournament but unfortunately didn't make it. Will you participate in the Continental Qualification Tournament to be held next month in New Caledonia?
A: Sure, I will. I hope to be qualified there. At Baku, I was beat by a Korean athlete at the quarter-final. But I couldn't stop there for my Olympic dream.

Q: Isn't it difficult to balance your life as student and taekwondo athlete?
A: Yes, it is. But my university in Sydney takes special care of me and allows much leeway to do both, study and taekwondo.

Q: Can you tell me when you started taekwondo and what motivated to do it?
A: I started taekwondo when I was 13 years old at my parents'
recommendation. Soon I found that I really liked "fighting".

Q: Starting at 13 years old.. you started not that early. You must have trained very hard to reach such a high level.
A: Yes, I have been training very hard. For the World Qualification Tournament and Universiade, I have trained morning and evening, 6 days per week. It is hard but I love it!

This a very welcome change to the situation faced by athletes in Australia since 2007 when funding was ceased as a result of Taekwondo Australia failing to comply with AOC and ASC requirements.

To date athletes, their parents and coaches have needed to substantially fund their own costs associated with international competitions with some financial support from STA. With STA now being recognised as the Member National Association within Australia and internationally, the future nowlooks bright for athletes who aspire to representing their country internationally.

STA looks forward to working with its partners to establish a comprehensive and well funded High Performance and Development Program to benefit our aspiring Taekwondo athletes and to again secure long term funding arrangements for our athletes and programs.

STA Selection events for World Championships and WTF Olympic Qualification events

STA is the only organisation recognised as the WTF's Member National Association and National Federation in Australia under the Olympic Charter.  Further, as recently confirmed by the IOC, STA is the only organisation that the AOC can recognise as its member and the National Federation both under its Constitution and under the Olympic Charter.

Following this IOC directive, the AOC has confirmed that it will now proceed to consider STA's membership application. Notwithstanding the AOC's position to date, STA's Defence in the Federal Court proceeding maintains that STA is presently, and has since November 2009, been entitled to recognition as the National Federation for the sport of Taekwondo in Australia by the AOC, because it satisfies all of the relevant criteria for membership under clause 6.2 of the AOC Constitution.

Once STA's formal membership application is determined, STA looks forward to working with the AOC to develop Nomination Criteria to the AOC for the London 2012 Olympics.  The Nomination Criteria will relate to STA's nomination of athletes to the AOC for selection into the Olympic Team.  Those nominations will of course not occur until shortly prior to the London Olympics.

On 13 March 2011 Event 1D of STA's WTF sanctioned Olympic Qualification Selection Process was held.  The winners of Event 1D were:

Female Divisions:
46kg   Jasmine Branca
49kg   Chynea Lang
53kg   Bernadette Branca
57kg   Jessica Jordan
62kg   Carmen Marton
67kg   Chloe Iriyadi
73kg   Jasmine Cross
73+kg  -

Male Divisions:
54kg   Steven Foullas
58kg   Gylan Al-Atroushi
63kg   Safwan Khalil
68kg   Brodie Sciberras
74kg   Hayder Shkara
80kg   Hayden Shrive
87kg   Aydal Ozalp
87+kg Adam Underwood

These athletes will be invited as members of STA’s Australian Team to contest the WTF World Championships, 1-6 May, 2011 in Gyeongju, Korea.

The next event in STA's WTF sanctioned Olympic Qualification Selection Process will be Event 1E where athletes who do not compete in the World Championships will have the opportunity to gain further points to assist in their selection to contest the WTF's World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Baku, Azerbaijan from 30 June to 3 July 2011.

The selection of athletes for the WTF Olympic Qualification Tournament will be made by STA in accordance with the WTF sanctioned Olympic Qualification Selection process.  The WTF has confirmed in writing that tournament entries will be accepted on the signature of STA's President as occurred in respect of the most recent Youth Olympic Games.

Should Australian athletes achieve the requisite levels of success at the WTF Olympic Qualification Tournaments, quota places will be allocated to Australia for the London 2012 Olympics.  Whether or not Australia takes up its quota allocation for Taekwondo at the 2012 Olympics will ultimately be a decision for the AOC.

AOC to consider STA's application for membership

On 14 February 2011, the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) and TKD-Sports Taekwondo Australia Inc. (STA) had a fruitful meeting, progressing STA's formal application for membership of the AOC and recognition as Australia's National Federation for the sport of Taekwondo.  The IOC has advised the AOC that the only entity that the AOC can consider for membership is STA given its recognition by the WTF. Clicke here to read the the AOC letter.

STA is presently compiling some administrative information for the AOC and the AOC has advised that it anticipates that it will be in a position to make a decision on admitting STA to membership soon thereafter.  STA will also be working with the AOC to finalise STA¹s 2012 Nomination Criteria for the London Olympics.

In the meantime, STA continues its WTF Sanctioned World & Regional Qualification Selection Process. The next event in that Process, Event 1C, is being conducted in Melbourne on 20 February 2010.

STA will keep the Australian Taekwondo Community informed of any developments as they occur over the next few weeks.

Federal Court dismisses TA's claim and orders TA to pay STA's legal costs!

On 16 December 2010, the Federal Court of Australia dismissed TA's interlocutory application to restrain STA from promoting its Australian tournaments and selection process for the WTF's Qualification System for the London 2012 Olympic Games Taekwondo Competition.

Whilst the Federal Court accepted that STA is Australia's member of the WTF and that unless Australian Taekwondo competitors meet the requirements of the WTF, they cannot "get past first base" to be eligible to compete at the London Games, it was noted by the Court that unless the AOC ends its stalemate between STA and TA, no Taekwondo athlete will represent Australia at the 2012 Olympics even if they would otherwise have satisfied the criteria set down by the WTF.

However, in a 16 December 2010 letter to STA and TA, which was also provided to the Court, the AOC has moved to end its stalemate between STA and TA, stating that unless TA successfully challenges STA's membership of the WTF within 28 days (the deadline has since been extended to 31 January 2011), the AOC will assess STA's application for membership of the AOC and, if accepted, admit STA as the AOC member, clearing the way for Australian Taekwondo athletes to compete at the Olympics in 2012. (Click here to read the AOC's letter)

Putting the interests of the Athletes first, the Court ruled that the balance of convenience favoured STA being permitted to continue to promote its Australian tournaments and selection process for the WTF's Qualification System for the London 2012 Olympic Games Taekwondo Competition, pending a decision from the AOC and a full trial of the claims made by TA in the proceeding.

The Court dismissed TA's claims for an interlocutory injunction and ordered TA to pay STA's costs of TA's unsuccessful application.

The long standing dispute that has plagued our Sport is now certain to end following these recent developments and the AOC's recent decision is welcomed by STA. STA now looks forward to working with the AOC and the Australian Sports Commission and the entire Australian Taekwondo Community to build strong and lasting relationships in the interests of our sport.

We will keep you informed of further developments and our progress with the AOC early in the new year.

Happy New Year to all.
